Scope of Responsibility

In order to fulfill CTCA’s Mission as a home of integrative and compassionate cancer care always searching for and providing powerful and innovative therapies, the Company relies on integrated and innovative technology solutions.  A recent change has resulted in the Vice President IT Applications position becoming available to help support the organization’s IT goals and objectives.

The Vice President IT Applications has responsibility for all enterprise-wide IT application activities, including clinical, hospital administration, marketing, finance, talent, and interfaces.  The Vice President IT Applications will establish an application strategy aligned to CTCA’s strategic business needs and will interpret their meaning to the organization’s senior leadership team.  The individual will be a strong leader focused on coaching and development of the Applications team manager’s and their stakeholders.  They will understand the organization’s core IT competencies and the value they bring to the patient, those caring for the patient, and overall business processes to position CTCA as a competitive advantage.  They will ensure satisfaction with IT related services for both internal and external customers.  Finally, they will ensure that 99.999% system up-time is maintained allowing for a safe environment for CTCA’s patients.

The Vice President IT Applications reports to the Chief Information Officer (CIO) of Cancer Treatment Centers of America.  The position is a member of the IT - Senior Operations team which consists of the following roles in addition to the Vice President IT Applications:  Chief Information Officer, Chief Medical Information Officer, VP of Technology.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Serve and participate proactively with other members of CTCA’s IT-Senior Operations leadership team in developing and executing strategic and operational IT plans
  • Provide inspiration and motivation to the IT Applications department and all other IT stakeholders to maximize employee engagement
  • Provide coaching and development of the IT Application team members and aid the managers and directors in their coaching and development of their stakeholders
  • Provide strategic and tactical planning, development, evaluation, and coordination of the application technology for CTCA.  It is not expected that the candidate be hands-on; however, the individual should have a technical background and relevant experience to understand, guide, and challenge technical direction within a healthcare environment
  • Oversee operations, configuration and lifecycle management around Electronic Medical Record, ERP, HRIS, CRM and back office and clinical applications. 
  • Lead custom development team while following industry best practice methodologies around code development and management
  • Collaborate effectively with IT peers and business customers
  • Ensure the continuous delivery of the application project portfolio aligning and prioritizing project delivery based upon patient and business value and governance principles
  • Develop and maintain an application portfolio and roadmap
  • Coordinate, facilitate and consult with appropriate internal customers on information systems, technology and application systems initiatives
  • Manage multiple process and application systems and projects, including clinical, administrative, financial, and external facing applications
  • Ensure that CTCA’s applications are in compliance with applicable laws, policies and procedures
  • Ensure appropriate recovery plans are in place, communicated, and tested
  • Participate in policy and decision making discussions and make recommendations regarding resource allocation and future direction and control of proposed information systems
  • Manage senior level IT staff including interviewing, training, assigning and directing work, performance management, and evaluating job performance
  • Partner with PMO and Portfolio Management functions to analyze resource utilization and initiate programs to maximize department efficiency and quality
  • Assess proposed technology projects and recommend appropriate action based on technical guidelines/standards and organizational priorities
  • Prepare and manage assigned budgets
  • Participate in or provide consultation to committees, user groups or special seminars
  • Manage vendor relationships in the best interest of CTCA while providing a professional representation of CTCA in the marketplace
  • Implement LEAN principles in all IT initiatives

Position Requirements

The qualified candidate will possess a Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business Administration, or related field.  This person ideally has 15 or more years of IT and business/industry work experience, at a minimum 5 years in a Healthcare/Hospital environment,  with 7 - 10  years of leadership experience managing multiple, large, cross-functional teams or projects, influencing senior level management and key stakeholders.

  • Electronic Health Record (EHR) operational experience required
  • Experience leading technical operation of revenue cycle systems is required
  • Understanding of healthcare industry and ability to translate patient / business needs into technology needs as appropriate is required
  • Experience leading both custom development and buy/configure application teams
  • EHR system selection and implementation experience strongly preferred
  • MBA strongly preferred
  • Understanding of hospital operations is strongly preferred
