SECTION A:  Job Overview

The Med Support nurse assumes the accountability and responsibility as a professional nurse for providing total, comprehensive, continuous, and patient centered care for an assigned group of patients.  The Med Support nurse will provide direct patient contact, which includes assessing the patient, developing a comprehensive nursing plan of care, implementing aspects of nursing care to meet identified patient care outcomes, evaluating the effectiveness of a nursing plan of care, and education of patients/care givers who require therapy and other nursing services.  Established nursing objectives, standards, policies, and procedures will be followed in administering nursing care.  The Med Support nurse is accountable for practicing within the defined scope of practice for the Registered Nurse and is committed to providing safe, quality nursing care.

1. Assessment:

  • Collects patient data and completes required documentation with appropriate responses according to unit standards
  • Updates allergies in Electronic Medical Record
  • Updates patient’s current medication list in Electronic Medical Record
  • Identifies patient’s problems/needs and sets priorities
  • Identifies problems requiring further referral and/or follow-up
  • Reviews latest diagnostic results
  • Performs nursing assessment using critical thinking skills
  • Provides information to physicians and other Health Care Professionals of changes in patients condition

2. Education:

  • Educate the patient and caregivers about the disease process, side effects and health promotion
  • The education of the patient or caregiver and assessment of the patient’s or caregiver’s comprehension are documented
  • Active participation in continuing education programs, needs a minimum of 12 continuing education credits per year.
  • Knowledge obtained from continuing education program is shared with colleagues in order to improve care.
  • Maintain certification as required per position (BLS, ACLS, ONS Chemo/Bio certification)
  • Participates in orientation of new personnel through preceptorship.
