Job Summary/Purpose:

Advanced Practice Nurses (APN) are registered nurses who have acquired the formal education, extended knowledge base and clinical skills to practice in an advanced role as a credentialed member of the medical staff and direct health care provider.  Nurse Practitioners are authorized to practice by the State Board of Nursing in the state of practice via their advanced practice education, licensure, board certification in a specialty area and other additional skills for which they have been prepared through post-graduate education and training.  The APN serves as a leader and role model for professional development of peers and others. The APN will work collaboratively with other health care professionals.  

  • Utilizes critical judgment in the performance of comprehensive health assessment, differential medical diagnosis including ordering, conducting, interpreting diagnostic and laboratory tests, and the prescribing of pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatments in the direct management of acute and chronic illness and disease.
    • Conducts comprehensive physical examination.
    • Initiates and interprets diagnostic tests and procedures relevant to the patient’s current status.
    • Critically analyzes the assessment data in determining the diagnoses.
    • Prioritizes diagnoses using appropriate complex clinical reasoning.
  • Develops and implements a comprehensive plan of care that includes interventions and treatments to attain expected outcomes.
    • Addresses strategies for improving health status that reflect current health care, knowledge, research and practice.
    • Involves patient, family, and other members of the health care team, including use of community resources in the plan of treatment.
    • Makes independent decisions in solving complex patient care problems.
    • Collaborates with the health team members to establish priorities, manage care and coordinate efforts to achieve desired outcomes in providing planned treatment and services to the client.
  • Utilizes appropriate or specialized knowledge and skills in the provision of direct patient care.
    • Prescribes, orders, or implements interventions and treatments for the treatment/care plan.
    • Prescribes or dispenses drugs and devices based on a knowledge of pharmacological and physiological principles in accordance with state and federal laws and regulation, and as authorized under the appropriate Board of Nursing.
    • Utilizes an extensive awareness of community assets and available resources when assisting with making appropriate referrals and outreach.
  • Documents services provided to the patient in the electronic medical record.
    • Follows CTCA HIPAA guidelines and other state medical information requirements.
    • Documents revisions in diagnoses, outcomes and treatment plans.
    • Refers a patient to a physician or another health care provider if a situation or condition occurs in a patient as appropriate and needed.
  • In addition to practicing at Western Regional Medical Center, will also obtain privileges at applicable Outpatient Care Centers.


  • Obtains and documents a comprehensive health history for patients with a past or current diagnosis of cancer.
  • Uses evidence-based practice guidelines and assessment tools for evaluating patients with a past or current diagnosis of cancer.
  • Performs a physical assessment of patients with cancer that includes a comprehensive review of systems and evaluation of manifestations and toxicities related to cancer and its treatment.
  • Assesses actual or potential late effects of cancer and its treatment (e.g., second malignant neoplasms, cardiomyopathy, pulmonary dysfunction) in cancer survivors and the impact of physical comorbidities on cancer symptoms and response to treatment.
  • Assesses symptoms commonly seen in patients with cancer, for common signs and symptoms related to disease progression or recurrence and for patients who are at high risk for signs and symptoms of oncologic emergencies.
  • Conducts a pharmacologic assessment, including over-the-counter medications, prescription drugs, nutritional supplements, and other complementary, alternative, and integrative therapies, to identify and correct any potential interactions with cancer therapeutics.
  • Collaborates with the multidisciplinary team, patient, family, and caregivers to formulate a comprehensive plan of care for patients with cancer, including appropriate health education, health promotion and health maintenance, rehabilitation, and palliative care.
  • Demonstrates awareness of appropriate clinical trials and research studies for which patients may be eligible and assists in recruiting patients as appropriate.
  • Educates patients and families about expected and potential adverse effects and costs (as appropriate) of prescribed pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments and interventions as well as cancer survivors regarding their risk for long-term effects of cancer and its treatment.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), Nurse Practitioner (NP) is required
  • Minimum of two (2) years as ANP or commensurate training/experience is required, three (3) years’ experience or Oncology experience is preferred
  • Arizona Advanced Nurse Practitioner (NP) licensure is required
  • American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) is required
  • Prior Oncology experience as a Nurse is preferred
  • Proficient computer skills
