The Perioperative Nurse Manager is a Registered Nurse who is empowered to direct the delivery of personalized, comprehensive care to patients throughout the perioperative process.  They are responsible to provide leadership to licensed and unlicensed staff through delegation of duties and coordination with other disciplines, as well as provide for required education and training.  It is their responsibility to provide guidance and direct interaction with patients, their caregivers and their families as it pertains to their experiences in dealing with perioperative staff members.

Manages and oversees the coordination of educational activities encompassing clinical / non-clinical service activities in conjunction with the hospital education department.

1. Assessment/Practice Standard:

  • Practices and promotes positive peer and guest relations
  • Develop and implement department work processes to improve efficiency, foster cooperation among co-workers, maintain cooperation between departments and increase patient and staff satisfaction.
  • Takes prompt measures to prevent and address performance and behavior problems.

2. Education:

  • Active participation in education related continuing education programs.
  • Act as a clinical resource for staff and related disciplines in the care of the perioperative patient.
  • Supports the perioperative staff to develop, implement and facilitate educational activities

3. Planning Care:

  • Coordinates and directs the perioperative patient care operations
  • Schedules and monitors assignments, provides coverage to staff during absences, vacations and/or high patient volume times.
  • Completes staff schedules and changes, assures adequate staff available to deliver care.

4. Implementing/Managing Care:

  • Manages personnel effectively, and analyzes workload and skill requirement to meet care needs for shift.
  • Participates in and promotes quality improvement
  • Ensures adherence to perioperative nursing/AORN/ASPAN/AAMI/ONS/ standards of practice. The standards of practice establish a framework for monitoring care given and products used.
  • Serves as a consultant to the perioperative department staff, patient or caregiver regarding patient advocacy and delivery of safe, competent, and quality nursing care.

5. Evaluation:

  • Supports and assists with the development and actualization of the Perioperative Services Department goals, strategic plan and KPI’s.
  • Acts as an advocate and coordinator of patient care with other health care personnel and evaluate patient care measure instituted.
  • Establish priorities of patient care based on essential patient needs and available unit resources of time, personnel, equipment and supplies.
  • Documentation of pertinent statistics related to unit activities.
  • Responds quickly to patient loyalty survey complaints and provides follow up information to Patient Relations.
  • Responds quickly to variances in care and provides follow up information to Patient Relations.
  • Ensures compliance with applicable regulatory standards.

6. Leadership:

  • Manage costs while rendering quality care,
  • Actively involved in and accountable for establishing and maintaining the budgetary process.
  • Recognizes unit problems and takes responsibility for correction.
  • Complies with policies addressing safe working conditions.
  • Demonstrates active participation in PI processes: Responsible for performance improvement as it relates to perioperative nursing. Documentation of pertinent statistics relative to the department
  • Supervises all personnel within the perioperative department in performance of their role and position description.
  • Contributes to the hiring and termination decisions
  • Provides counseling and training, addresses disciplinary problems and appraises performance.
  • Active involvement in committees


  • Represents the interests, ideas and concerns of the staff and the facility to administration in order to maintain a collaborative and supportive working environment
  • Able to make independent decision.
  • Demonstrates flexibility by adjusting schedule as unexpected problems arise


Graduate of an accredited program of nursing-Bachelor of Science degree in nursing is recommended.

Three years previous management experience-healthcare preferred

Active Registered Nurse (RN) license to practice in Georgia

Current BLS certification

Current ACLS certification

AORN or ASPAN certification preferred

Three to five years of operating room/PACU preferred

A certain degree of creativity and latitude is required.

Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Excellent verbal and written communication skills

Able to interact with a wide variety of individuals and handle several complex situations simultaneously.

Demonstrates the willingness and ability to research learn and obtain knowledge for the performance of the position.

Demonstrates the ability to utilize critical thinking and apply sound clinical judgment and assessment skills for decision making
