Job Description:

Under the general supervision of the Director of Laboratory Services or the Lab Manager, the Laboratory Technical Supervisor plans, organizes and oversees the operational activities of the Laboratory.  Assists Medical Technologists/Technicians and other laboratory staff in day-to-day operations of the Laboratory. Maintains technical abilities to evaluate, instruct, and assist all sections of the laboratory.  Creates an effective working relationship with all stakeholders. Maintains technical expertise in specifically assigned sections of the laboratory while ensuring compliance with accrediting agencies’ standards. Performs a variety of routine and complex laboratory tests on body fluids and substances, requiring independent judgment, with speed and accuracy. The efforts of the individual(s) in this position, in collaboration with other health care professionals, provide data for the most accurate diagnosis or individual treatment of diseases for optimum patient outcomes. Assumes the authority and responsibilities of the Laboratory Administrative Director or Lab Manager in their absence. Represents, as assigned, the laboratory at various meetings and committees. Oversees projects related to future Laboratory endeavors. 

Assess activities of the laboratory staff to ensure competency and accuracy. Ensures proper standards are maintained relating to proficiency testing, including test assignment, result review, result submission and proper follow up. Performs routine and complex medical laboratory tests, procedures and analyses.

Develop work schedules. Monitors and ensures adequate staffing, reagent and supply availability while being mindful of budget parameters. Reviews test results, quality control and maintenance records to ensure high standards of quality are achieved. Ensures that all laboratory tests are performed in accordance with established standards.

Responsible for laboratory preparation for accrediting inspections with emphasis in assigned departments. Participate as part of CAP Inspection team. Complete continuing education in areas of responsibility to ensure levels of expertise are maintained or enhanced. Maintains the use of automated and computerized instruments including recognition of instrument malfunction and resolution with appropriate corrective actions.

Serves as a resource for staff in the oversight of daily laboratory operations of personnel and equipment. Evaluates the validity of test results; understands clinical implications; notifies primary caregiver of critical test results. Represents, as assigned, the laboratory at various meetings and committees. Assumes responsibility for the director in his/her absence.

Serves as an effective leader by managing performance of staff through effective delegation and ongoing coaching. Supervises the Medical Technologists/Technicians in performance of their role and position description. Provides input for hiring and termination decisions, assists with development of job descriptions and performance standards. Provides counseling, addresses disciplinary problems and appraises performance.

Researches and makes recommendations for new equipment and tests. Coordinates development of new policies/procedures. Ensures proper implementation. Develops and implements processes based upon accrediting standards, departmental goals, and Lean Six Sigma principles to ensure quality and consistent provision of services. Documents and maintains the appropriate records required by the hospital and laboratory accrediting agencies. Develops and maintains current procedure and policy manuals based upon defined accrediting agency standards. Promotes inter and intra-Departmental collaboration through positive communications by supporting standards of excellence as defined by our mission statements and strategic plan.

Ensures proper payroll by reviewing and maintaining records in the electronic payroll system.


  • Requires Degree in Medical Technology or equivalent experience required. (BS Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science; Associates Degree is Medical Lab Technology with MT certification)
  • Certification required (ASCP, AMT or AAB)
  • Supervisory experience preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years laboratory experience.
