This individual must be able to operate all Magnetic Resonance (MR)-related equipment (i.e. scanner, coils/arrays, power injector, monitoring equipment, etc.) in a safe and proficient manner.   They must abide by and enforce all compliance requirements and policies and perform these responsibilities in an ethical manner consistent with the organization's values.  This position requires initiative, the ability to make independent judgments and a positive attitude.  The candidate must be able to produce high quality images with a minimum of repeats.  Must be able to handle multiple room assignments and all different types of exams on a daily basis.  Must be able to communicate with physicians, patients, families, and ancillary hospital personnel. Will participate in performance improvement initiatives.  Will assist with other activities as deemed necessary for the day-to-day operation of the department (i.e. clerical duties, inventory, stocking, light housekeeping duties, etc.).  Position may require cross training in additional modalities as directed by the Director of Imaging.

Main Duties:

  • Will recommend repairs and work process efficiencies within their area and/or the department.  Shares responsibility for the maintenance of efficient scheduling, patient flow and quality assurance, as well as having an alertness for fiscal soundness within the division.
  • Performs Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) Exams. Ensures correct administration of contrast dosage and that patient’s lab values fall within range before administering contrast. Questions patients regarding sensitivity to contrast media and/or other pharmaceutical levels, and indwelling metal.  Provides patient care with compassion.
  • Authenticates all physician orders prior to exam. Maintains accurate records of exams performed. Documents patient exam information in the Radiology Information System, indicating correct begin and end times for patient exams.  Documents film usage in the Radiology Information System
  • Performs quality assurance on magnetic resonance equipment and camera. Ensures patient equipment remains functional during scanning period.  May recommend at time the procurement and necessity for maintenance of equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required by the Lead Technologist or Director of Imaging Services.
  • Pursues advancing medical education through personal study (i.e. journal article review, formal education, conferences, etc.).
  • Facilitates procurement of necessary forms, consents and documentation to comply with hospital standards and obtains required signatures.  Obtains required signatures, consents, and releases.


  • High School graduate or equivalent.  Satisfactory completion of formal Radiologic Technology training in an AMA approved school and is registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology in Radiography, ARRT (R), current Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification.
  • Completes a minimum of 24 hours of continuing education bi-annually and remains “in compliance” with the American Registry of Radiologic Technology’s continuing medical education requirement (CME).
  • Two years experience after graduation in a major hospital setting.
  • Knows cross-sectional anatomy of the head, thorax and abdomen, physiology and Magnetic Resonance Imaging terminology, practices and procedures.  Knowledge of proper billing codes and physician billing procedures. Must possess excellent interpersonal and customer service skills.
  • Demonstrates awareness and sensitivity to patient and family rights, as identified within the hospital.
  • Enforces magnetic field safety for Magnetic Resonance Imaging patients, operator and visitors.  Assists physicians and administers medications.
